"I Was Raped."

An article was brought to my attention by our Media Writing instructor Jill. It talks about a woman who has created a t-shirt with a particularity contraversial graphic on the front. There is an open safe with a small note inside. On the note is a small yet powerful message: "I Was Raped."

Although I'm sure everyone has an opinion on this topic, through much consideration, I have decided to take a step back from making any further judgements...and I think my fellow male comrades should probably do the same.

My basic stance on this is much the same as a fellow class-mate of mine...the very fact that we haven't been raped in our life-time makes our opinions 100% irrelevant. We don't know what it's like and will probably never know what it's like to feel used to that degree. We can't possibly fathom the confusion and frustration that comes with such a horrific experience. For that reason alone, guys, despite what you may think of the concept, we should probably just shut up and back off.

Perhaps through observance and empathy we can "get it" one day.

the only comment i really had was that the general public would just find this statement funny or a just a big joke.
but on the note i will take a step back.

I applaud your instinct, Scott, but you needn't withhold your opinion because you haven't been a victim of rape. What you should do is take a measured look at what you perceive to be the pros and the cons of such a t-shirt bearing such a statement and determine whether or not is has value.

STOP!

You are assuming only females are raped.

FACT! In southern wales there have been a string of vicious crimes commited against males, so vicious in fact, that men won't go out in groups. These incidents are not exclusive to Wales, but have been so concentrated in the area that it has gernered some publications on the interweb and in the local paper.

Apparently, groups of heavy-set women have been driving around bearing arms, and their arms are bearing guns! They grab you, stick the gun in your face, kidnap them for several days on end, and then re-release them into civilization after performing forced sexual acts.

How is this possible? I don't know. I don't want to imagine.

The point? Some people would see a guy wearing this shirt and think he is making a joke. He probably is, but maybe, just maybe, he was raped.
